About the HIAA
Founded in the fall of 2005, the Harvard College Italian American Association (HIAA) provides a forum for Italian-American students and those interested in the Italian-American culture to engage in the heritage through various social and academic events.
According to the 2000 National Census, Italian Americans constitute the seventh largest ethnic group in the United States with roughly 15.6 million people. From the discovery of the New World to the building of our national infrastructure to the selfless protection of the American democracy in various wars, Americans of Italian descent have a rich legacy in this country and a unique history largely defined by Old World traditions and the immigrant struggle.
Today, Italian Americans are noted as a people committed to family, hard work, patriotism, and cultural traditions. The struggle for today’s Italian American community is in reality that of previous generations: to preserve and promote our rich heritage, combat negative stereotypes, and make great strides forward without forgetting from where we have come. Bocce tournaments, North End excursions, author panels, and Italy-US political discussions are only a handful of the many events the HIAA hosts throughout the year. The HIAA also produces an annual journal featuring the most recent research on Italian-American literature and culture along with introspective articles on the Italian-American heritage.
